First look: Falling Skies alien feast on Old Street roundabout by Miss Cakehead and London Mess

A week before the final series of Spielberg-produced sci-fi drama Falling Skies hits UK screens next Tuesday, Londoners are being invited to feast on aliens – including Espheni limbs and the mucus eyeballs of Skitters.

The one-off extraterrestrial event will take place today (Tuesday 23 June) on Old Street roundabout and has been created by foodie extremists Miss Cakehead and Jim Thomlinson of London Mess.

The same pair have previously been responsible for feeding Londoners ‘human flesh’ burgers to celebrate the release of the latest The Walking Dead, and serving a whole deep-fried roast dinner as part of Easter pop-up #FryHard. In the past Miss Cakehead has also brought about maggot-ridden cupcakes, treats made to look like organs and a collection of particularly, erm, graphic cakes modelled on a certain female body part. Nice.

We got a sneak peek at the surreal gastronomic creations to expect at the feast, where dishes will be served on trampled cardboard and old-looking packaging instead of plates, in a nod to the scavenging which goes on in the show.

The menu include mixed alien brains, Skitter eyeballs, grilled Harnesses, dried Skitter exoskeleton and a scavenged dessert table, while diners can expect sides in old ammunition boxes, oysters in a polytunnel, a grill that emits bright-coloured smoke as ‘aliens’ are cooked and and giant 12 inch prawns, along with a lot of surprises. And it should actually taste good, too.

It will all happen against a backdrop of many of the actual alien models used for filming – including a Skitter, a Harness, and Scorch – an Overlord which is 3m tall and took two and a half months to build.

Spielberg’s series begins six months after a devastating alien invasion has all but wiped out humanity, leaving unlikely hero Tom Mason to lead a band of survivors. They are forced to battle with alien invaders while scavenging for food, shelter and belongings.

In the upcoming fifth and final series, they have had enough and prepare to destroy the enemy in an epic battle to determine the fate of the Earth. The final series will premiere in the UK on Tuesday 30 June at 9pm.
